About this deal

The ballad told of a certain witcher and a certain poet. About how the witcher and the poet met on the seashore, among the crying of seagulls, and how they fell in love at first sight. About how beautiful and powerful was their love. About how nothing - not even death - was able to destroy that love and part them. In 2001, a Television Series based on the Witcher cycle was released in Poland and internationally, entitled Wiedźmin (The Hexer). A film by the same title was compiled from excerpts of the television series but both have been critical and box office failures.

A close up on the witcher characters is the unofficial title of Sword of Destiny book, I swear! It was very enjoyable to remeet with the men and women I came to love in The Last Wish. They are now a bit less of a mystery and more like old friends to me. Whether he knows it or not, Geralt of Rivia is getting closer to his fate with every step he takes in this unusual but enlightening collection of short stories. Dragons, mermaids, dopplers and dryads, this book challenges him in very untypical ways. Mister Seahorse: Played for laughs in A Little Sacrifice, when the mermaid points out she can't mate with the prince, since he as human can't carry her roe in any other way than in a hat. During the journey it has become increasingly clear that, this being Brokilon, Ciri will likely never be permitted to leave. So now, in addition to his original message, Geralt must now speak with Eithné about Ciri's fate as well. The queen of the dryads is proud and determined, not to mention particularly unsympathetic towards the humans who have relegated her people to one tiny patch of forest.Only Sane Man: Much of the book's humor is derived from the fact that Geralt occupies this role in the setting. Everyone is one shade of crazy or another.

Lo que representa el Caos es una amenaza, es el lado de la agresión. El Orden, en cambio, es el lado amenazado, que necesita de defensa. Que necesita de defensores" Dominant Species Genes: Dryads have to breed with human or elf men and the child will always be a dryad. The children will very rarely have their father's features like hair or eyes. This may be related to the dryads' demonstrated ability to turn fully human girls into dryads. Eithne allows Ciri to choose whether she wants to stay in the forest or leave with Geralt. She makes Ciri drink the water of Brokilon, which removes memories of a former life, but it doesn't affect Ciri. At the same time, drinking the water causes Geralt to realize that Ciri is "Cirilla, daughter of Pavetta and granddaughter to Queen Calanthe of Cintra, and Geralt's promised 'Child of Destiny' as per the Law of Surprise (which he enacted in "A Question of Price").

Tyke-Bomb: When visiting Duén Canell, Geralt muses how there are almost no young dryads there and those few child-aged are all naturalised human girls. Braenn, Geralt, and Ciri arrive in Duen Canell, the heart of Brokilon. Freixenet's wounds have been treated, as the dryads intend for him to impregnate some of them. Ciri realizes that the dryads plan to keep her—the dryads bolster their numbers by taking and brainwashing young girls into their culture, as they had done to Braenn. Geralt meets Eithne and the two discuss destiny, which Eithne believes is a "doubled-edged sword". Arc Words: "Something more" is said repeatedly throughout the text of Something More, doubling as a Title Drop. Dandelion, staring into the dying embers, sat much longer, alone, quietly strumming his lute. It began with a few bars, from which an elegant, soothing melody emerged. The lyric suited the melody, and came into being simultaneously with it, the words bending into the music, becoming set in it like insects in translucent, golden lumps of amber. I am quite happy that I enjoyed those two books before the main series, I mean usually short story collections don’t work for me for some reason but those ones did and those introduced the characters so now it will be easier to read the main series!

Not Listening to Me, Are You?: Queen Calanthe has a surreal conversation where she threatens Geralt with horrible death, torture, and murder to prevent him from claiming her granddaughter to be a Witcher. Geralt makes it abundantly clear he's not actually interested in claiming her and this does nothing to dissuade Calanthe from continuing her spiel.Tin Man: Geralt. Istredd delivers a cruel Breaking Speech where he says that Geralt, as a mutant, was stripped of all human emotions, can't feel as humans do, and can only imitate them. The Witcher actually believes it's true, and that makes him very bitter, angry and sad. Cat Like Dragons: Villentretenmerth is described as having something graceful and feline in the way he sits. Asquero es el mundo alrededor. Pero esa no es razón para que nosotros todos nos volvamos asquerosos" There is no destiny, he thought. It does not exist. The only thing that everyone is destined for is death. Death is the other blade of the two-edged sword. I am the first blade.’

The next morning, Geralt meets the pompous warrior Ivo Mirce (a.k.a. "Cicada") who works for the alderman Herbolth, who pays Geralt his fee for killing the zeugl but subtracts a small tax. Herbolth also mentions that Yennefer has been in Aedd Gynvael many times before to visit Istredd. As Geralt leaves, Cicada harasses him. The opening of Sword of Destiny introduces Geralt once again on his monster-hunting mission, which is his sole purpose as a Witcher. The story follows Geralt as he goes to watch the townsfolk embark on killing a dragon; although Geralt is bound by a Witcher code not to kill intelligent creatures, he still travels to see how the events unfold. From there on the stories consist of Geralt facing mimics, mermaids, sea monsters and druids, alongside partially chasing his beloved Yennefer. I found Sword of Destiny to be more of a light-hearted romp than The Last Wish, particularly in the stories that predominantly involved Dandelion. Now this wasn’t a negative aspect, but it did take me a while to adjust to. Dandelion is a wonderfully amusing character; he’s your typical ‘cheeky chappie’ with his openly lewd behaviour towards women and his constant bragging of how great a poet he is! I found myself highly entertained by the contrast between Geralt’s more dry and stoic nature, and Dandelion’s brazenness. They had some excellent banter between them, and my love for banter never ceases! I also appreciated that Dandelion served as Geralt’s one true friend, which was warming. Ultimately, Eithné allows Ciri to choose her own fate and Ciri chooses the witcher. The queen also decides to spare Freixenet on the basis that he is an acquaintance of Geralt and that he did not have the intention of hunting dryads when he trespassed into the forest. After all, dryads still need males to make new dryads, so it seems that the large man will become a stud.Dramatic Irony: A Little Sacrifice has a very minor and plot-irrelevant example Played for Laughs: Dandelion reacts with disbelief when Geralt informs him high and low tides are caused by the moon. Geralt recalls meeting Dandelion soon after Nilfgaard began marching across the continent. Geralt saves Dandelion and promises to help him cross the river after he goes to Cintra. Dandelion tells him that Cintra has fallen, with Calanthe throwing herself from the castle walls and all of the nobility committing suicide. Ciri is missing and assumed dead. Despondent, Geralt asks Dandelion if he believes in destiny, and claims that even if two people are destined to be together, there must be "something more" for that destiny to mean anything. Character Death: Queen Calanthe of Cintra, introduced in The Last Wish, dies here. Her daughter and son in law, Pavetta and Duny, too, but later, we find out Duny faked his death. The next scene opens at night as Geralt wakes up to find himself being treated by a sorceress and healer, Visenna. Up until this point, he had always wondered if he would ever cross paths with the woman who gave him up to the witchers. He had thought about her from time to time over the years contemplating what he would tell to her, what question he would ask should they ever meet. He assumed it would cause some twisted pleasure to him. Now that the meeting has happened, he's too tired and weak and plans to look her in the eyes and ask his question the next day in the daylight. However Visenna steers Geralt to rest stating he won't want that anymore when he's awake again. By asking rhetorical questions she further dismisses the idea of doing what he plans as it won't change anything. As she finally says a goodbye, Geralt tries to resist her soothing activity and prevent her from disappearing again, but fails.
