About this deal

With a maximum cutting diameter of 32mm, you can attack plants, roses, shrubs, small tree branches with total confidence. I found the rubber cushioned, shock absorbing, forged aluminium alloy handles to be gentle on my wrists, with a slick bypass cutting action.

Every part of these secateurs are replaceable just in case anything becomes faulty, though that’s a very rare occurrence given the quality of the construction materials. Finally, they have a good cutting capacity of 25mm and can cut in tight areas where some other models might struggle, especially anvil models. However, if you do ask for goods to be left on your property while you are out, the courier will be unable to get a signature, so this is at your own risk. They are very strong and seem very well constructed, under testing they cut through hard thick branches cleanly, but did slightly crush softer foliage with fresh new growth, overall they produce nice, straight clean cuts. They may look like cheaper pruners, but that is because many cheap brands have copied the design but none have come close to the quality.

One common problem we come across with models that have exposed springs is that the springs can get dislodged and fall out. Most standard-looking secateurs have these types of springs, including all Felco models, it’s not a bad thing but something to be aware of. Made by Japanese manufacturers Niwaki, these are of exceptional quality and a perfect fit for smaller hands. The blades of these razor-sharp secateurs are forged from the finest Japanese steel (the same steel from which the Katana sword of the Samurai are made), and enable you to effortlessly cut through branches up to 25 mm, of such as shrubs, roses, fruit trees, and creepers.

They’re unfortunately let down by a lack of grip in the handle, which rendered them almost unusable when it rained, as I found they just slipped through my fingers. The Davoen Pro Bypass Secateurs have a quirky design that makes them stand out from the competition. However, topiary expert Lerigo says he found the latch used to open them involved too much fumbling around on ladders for his liking, a situation not helped by cold, numb or gloved hands. The handles are made from the same forged aluminium steel which makes them very strong, lightweight and nearly unbreakable. Slightly less popular are ratchet pruners which are more powerful and better for cutting through thicker branches.

Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ. There’s little doubt that the technology behind its workmanship is a brilliant attempt to make something better but it also carries some shortcomings. In fact, you don’t even require fingers to open them: you can simply hold the secateurs in your hand and brush the catch against your leg or hip – forwards to unlock, back to lock. They definitely do an amazing job and suits pruners with smaller hands but if you have larger hands then the 104 models may be a good choice because they are just that bit larger at 210mm.Below, we’ve reviewed the best secateurs on the market in depth, and sought expert advice on popular questions like the difference between bypass and anvil mechanisms, how to care for secateur blades, and what to do if anything gets jammed. There’s a useful clunky catch at the base for locking the blades together when not in use, improving safety significantly.
