I'm obsessed, it kept me on my toes with the little twists and turns, and my jaw was on the damn floor with that plot twist. And with the legends and old wives tales abounding this is giving me everything I could possibly want.
I really enjoyed the forbidden romance element and the spice was incredibly well written; seductive and satisfying.

This book is about Corvina Clemm and her relationship with Vad Deverell, a part time teacher at her new university - they are unlike any couple I’ve ever read about. I loved the world building in this dark academia environment, the story kept me on my toes, whenever I thought about something it was the other way around. He also seemed to enjoy looking at young girls too much in the class, all eighteen-year-old first-years except an older Corvina. It made me hate the second part of this story especially when the characters full out said that some things don't have or need answers. When evil stories of humans disappearing every 5 years cause their worlds to crumble even further and Corvina begins to uncover clues that may separate truth from myth, can they trust each other to unravel the centuries-old mystery?seriously though i went into this pretty blind off the rec that it was a ~dark academia mystery~ a la ninth house/secret history… i think a more accurate comparison would be my immortal. In the beginning, I found Vad kinda fun and fresh, they gave me YA feels with the setup of the gothic scenery but they literally went from 0-100. This is the part of my review where I would normally start gushing over the characters and discussing the plot.
Spine-tingling, atmospheric, sexy, and macabre, Gothikana is gothic romance and dark academia in its finest form. honestly this was a solid book, all the elements were just good enough that it kept me invested, but aside from the setting, none of them completely knocked it out of the park for me.
A lifelong mystery, Vad Deverell likes to be a closed book but he knows exactly what’s going on at the university. And yes, yes, I know teacher/student is a thing for some people and probably fits the dark academia theme (more on dark academia in As she tries to adjust to life in the haunting and secluded halls of the castle, she finds herself attracting the attention of Vad Deverell, a part-time professor working on his thesis. As Vad’s secrets are revealed, Corvina is able to discover if she is really trying to solve the mystery or if he is the real reason behind the evil madness brewing in the castle.
When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. Not only that, but the dark academia aesthetic it was apparently striving for was nowhere to be seen beyond needing a reason for all these characters to be in one building. The unique world-building was different from what I usually see in darker books, and I loved every second of it. The biggest mystery was unsolved and not even explained properly, we were diverted to somebody else being responsible for two deaths, but not the rest of the disappearances.She had seen cars, but she’d never been inside one, not until the day they came for her and put her in one. Anyway, Corvina here is home schooled in the middle of nowhere by a mother with paranoid schizophrenia who talks to crows. Personally, I like the age gap to be a bit bigger in teacher/student books for the more taboo aspect, so this was kind of like.
